The Des Moines Fencing Club offers a variety of classes and demonstrations to teach the community about the sport of fencing.

Basic Demonstration

Length: 20 min.

Members of the DMFC perform a show involving the history of fencing, equipment of the modern fencer, and demonstrations of the three Olympic weapons: foil, epee, and saber. There is some interaction during the show and time for questions and answers at the end.

Interactive Demonstration

Length: 45 min.

Members of the DMFC perform a show involving the history of fencing, equipment of the modern fencer, and demonstrations of the three Olympic weapons: foil, epee, and saber. At the end, audience members are invited to join the presenters on the floor to learn the basic positions of ready and en garde. There is some interaction during the show and time for questions and answers at the end.

Introduction to Fencing

Length: 2 hrs.

DMFC members teach the basics of fencing including ready and en garde positions, advance and retreat footwork including distance drills, equipment and suit up, holding the foil, and a basic attack with advance. At the end of the class, DMFC members demonstrate the three Olympic weapons. This class is intended to give the participants a feel for the sport. All equipment is provided by the DMFC. Moderate levels of activity are required by the participants.
